How to Find a Trusted Real Estate Agent

A Local Realtor's Guide to Choosing the Right Agent for One of Life's Biggest Decisions

Buying or selling a home is one of the biggest financial decisions you'll ever make. The person you choose to guide you through that journey matters.

One of the most common questions people search online is:

"How do I find a trusted real estate agent?"

It's a great question—and one that deserves more than a list of agents with smiling headshots.

Whether you're buying your first home, relocating to the Triangle, or selling a luxury property, here's exactly how I would recommend finding an agent you can trust.

1. Start With People You Trust

The best place to begin isn't Zillow or Google.

It's your friends.

Ask family members, friends, neighbors, coworkers, or anyone who recently bought or sold a home in the area where you're moving.

Instead of simply asking:

"Who did you use?"

Ask questions like:

  • Would you hire them again?
  • Did you feel they listened to you?
  • Did they negotiate well?
  • Were they proactive?
  • Did they communicate when things got stressful?
  • Did they make the process easier?

The best recommendations come from people who describe how the agent made them feel, not just whether the transaction closed.

2. Read Their Reviews—Really Read Them

Once you have a few names, spend time reading their online reviews.

Don't just look at the star rating.

Read the stories.

Look for patterns.

Do clients repeatedly mention:

  • Great communication?
  • Strong negotiation?
  • Honest advice?
  • Calm under pressure?
  • Local knowledge?
  • Responsiveness?

Those recurring themes tell you far more than five stars alone.

If an agent has very few reviews—or none at all—that should prompt additional questions. Reviews aren't everything, but they do provide valuable insight into the experiences of past clients.

3. Look at Their Past Sales

This is one of the most overlooked steps.

If you're selling a $1.5 million home in Chapel Hill, you'll probably benefit from working with someone who regularly markets luxury homes—not someone whose experience is mostly entry-level condos.

Likewise, if you're buying in Carrboro, Durham, Cary, Pittsboro, or Raleigh, look for an agent who consistently works in those communities.

Ask yourself:

  • Do they sell homes like mine?
  • Do they know my neighborhood?
  • Do they understand my price point?
  • Have they successfully negotiated similar transactions?

Local expertise isn't just knowing street names.

It's understanding:

  • buyer behavior
  • neighborhood trends
  • pricing strategies
  • school districts
  • future development
  • inventory changes
  • what makes one street more valuable than another

Those details can save—or earn—you thousands of dollars.

4. If You're Relocating, Start Online—but Go Deeper

Many people relocating to North Carolina don't know anyone here.

That's perfectly normal.

Start with Google.

Search things like:

  • Best Realtor in Chapel Hill
  • Chapel Hill relocation Realtor
  • Durham luxury Realtor
  • Cary Realtor
  • Pittsboro real estate expert
  • Raleigh Realtor

You'll probably see sponsored agents.

Sponsored doesn't automatically mean bad.

Many excellent agents advertise.

But don't stop there.

Take the extra step.

Visit their website.

Read their blog.

Watch their videos.

See if they're actually educating people—or simply asking for business.

The best agents teach long before you ever become their client.

5. Make Sure You're Actually Hiring That Agent

This surprises many people.

Sometimes you'll click on an individual agent's profile only to discover later that you've been assigned to someone else on their team.

If you're choosing an agent because you liked their experience, communication style, or reputation, ask directly:

"Will I be working with you throughout the process?"

Large teams can provide wonderful service, but you deserve to know who your day-to-day advisor will be before making a commitment.

6. Interview More Than One Agent

The National Association of REALTORS® recommends asking thoughtful questions before choosing an agent, including their experience, business philosophy, and knowledge of your local market.

Some questions I would ask include:

  • How do you communicate?
  • How often will we talk?
  • What's happening in my market right now?
  • What would you do differently than other agents?
  • Can you explain your strategy?
  • What happens if something unexpected comes up?

You're not hiring someone to unlock doors.

You're hiring an advisor.

7. Look for Local Expertise, Not Just Years of Experience

Experience matters.

But relevant experience matters even more.

I'd rather work with someone who has spent five years deeply studying Chapel Hill than someone with twenty years of experience somewhere else.

Markets change.

Neighborhoods evolve.

Inventory shifts.

The best agents stay students of their market.

8. Find Someone Who Educates Instead of Pressures

One of the biggest red flags?

Pressure.

A trusted Realtor should help you understand your options—not push you toward a decision.

You should leave every conversation feeling:

  • more informed
  • more confident
  • less anxious

Not more confused.

Buying and selling homes is emotional.

A great Realtor becomes your guide—not your salesperson.

9. Choose Someone Whose Values Match Yours

Every Realtor has a different philosophy.

Mine is simple.

I don't believe in chasing transactions.

I believe in building relationships.

Sometimes that means encouraging a client not to buy a house.

Sometimes it means advising a seller to wait six months before listing.

Sometimes it means telling someone they should spend less than they can afford.

Because my job isn't to close deals.

It's to help people make smart decisions they'll still be happy with years later.

That's my North Star.

10. Trust Your Gut

After you've done the research…

Read the reviews.

Look at past sales.

Interview a few agents.

Pay attention to how you feel.

Do you trust them?

Do they listen?

Do they explain things clearly?

Do they make complicated topics understandable?

Do they make you feel like you're their priority?

The right Realtor should leave you feeling confident—not pressured.

My Philosophy

Everything I do begins with one question:

"If this were my family's home, what advice would I give?"

That question guides every recommendation I make.

Whether I'm helping someone relocate to Chapel Hill, buy their dream home in Cary, sell a luxury property in Durham, move to Pittsboro, or find the perfect neighborhood in Raleigh, my advice stays the same:

Lead with honesty.

Communicate clearly.

Protect the client's interests.

Never lose sight of what's best for them.

Homes are important.

People matter more.
